Call for Papers – Last Chance!

We learn best when we play. In recent years, several enterprises have realized the potential of using games to introduce concepts and ideas about their services and products using games and the social media platform. This was aided by the proliferation of mobile devices. As such, games are no longer ‘child’s play’. Working adults and seniors are beginning to play more games.
At the same time, academic research in gaming technologies has recently witnessed a plateau in improving rendering, texture mapping, physics and artificial intelligence. Are there still areas which game technologies require more research?
SGSC 2013 aims to gather together academics, practitioners and policy makers on a like-minded platform, and welcomes submissions (but not limited) to the following areas:
A. Learning Pedagogy, Methodologies & Assessment
B. Serious Games Applications
C. Game Designs, Studies and Theories
D. Technologies, Platforms and Interfaces
E. Policies, Guidelines and Taxonomy
F. Case Studies and Survey Papers
Please submit your papers TODAY through this link!
* or at least before 1-2-2013…
The event is in Singapore on the 26-8-2013 / 28-8-2013 and covers all mentioned areas and much more.
I am just one of the humble co-readers of submissions…

Alcatraz Prison – An Epic Experience!

Talking about an epic experience! I went a few days early to San Francisco to spend some time on my own before the business tour through Silicon Valley with a Dutch delegation started. Check out the pictures below and the video of my visit to notorious prison Alcatraz where Al Capone was at home for four years (from 1934 – 1938)!

Americans really know how to build up an experience. From waiting in line for 30 minutes before the boattrip starts, you can read some more about the prison through a brochure and interactive installations and have your picture taken before a backdrop image of the island.

Interactive installations throughout the waiting area made waiting less annoying. In Dutch I call this a ‘wacht-verzachter’ in English you could call it a ‘Wait-watcher’.

During the boat trip the brochure sounds through the speakers.

On the island itself you can watch a 17 minute film about the island (comparable content of the brochure) and do an interactive audio tour of about 40 minutes explaining you all the different areas and stories that took place, even explaining how 5 inmates escaped from the island in June 1962. This event was immortalized later in a film called ‘Escape from Alcatraz (duh) with Clint Eastwood).

This is one of the cells where one of the 5 inmates that escaped slept. You can see how they dug a hole around the ventilation shaft. Eventually they all got out by climbing throughout the hole they dug, climbed up the heating pipes and … gone…  No one knows if they survived the mile swimming to the main land, since they were never found again.

A picture of the ‘arrival’ at Alcatraz Island. Originally build as a military prison during America’s Civil War.

Lady Mitra interacting with Wall of Balls.MOV

>

Last week I visited London, Manchester and Birmingham with a delegation of the most promising Dutch Creative Companies. During this tour we visited all kinds of events like the entrepreneur conference in the Milky Building in Tech City (Shoreditch) on Monday, the BBC studios, a match making lunch, a meet and great with our prime minister – Mark Rutte and a high tea in the town hall of Manchester. The third day we went to Launch – a game event in Birmingham and we visited RARE Entertainment – one of the key developers for Xbox Kinect. They created the best selling Sports series. I went back to London on Thursday to have a fabulous day with my good girlfriend Mitra and she took me to all kinds of museums (VNA & Science Museum) and a fantastic authentic Iranian restaurant near Paddington and Hyde Park (hidden park as we call it).

This is just a small video of Mitra interacting with a video wall that uses the Camera Interaction Technology. At first we didn’t understand what it was about until the balls started to copy the shape of her movement… Well done by the artist!

Below some pictures of the other stuff we visited during the tour in the UK and my moment with our prime minister! I handed over the Dutch version of the book (Laat met je merk spelen). Be sure to download your personal copy of ‘A Brand New Playground’ at www.brandnewplayground.com (it’s in English of course 😉

Hope you enjoy!
